Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine Harina PAN and salt.
  • Add Water Gradually: Slowly pour lukewarm water into the bowl while kneading with your hands.
  • Knead: Continue kneading until the dough is soft, smooth, and free of lumps. If using cheese, incorporate it at this stage.
  • Rest the Dough: Let the dough sit for 5-10 minutes to allow the ingredients to integrate fully.

Step 2: Shape the Arepas

  • Form Balls: Grab a handful of dough and roll it into a ball (about 2-2.5 inches in diameter).
  • Flatten: Gently press the ball into a disk, about 0.5-0.75 inches thick.

  • Heat a cast iron griddle or frying pan to medium heat.

  • Optionally, finish them in a preheated oven at 400°F for 10-15 minutes.
  • Arepas Fritas (Fried):
  • Heat oil in a frying pan or deep fryer to medium heat.
  • Fry arepas for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Arepas Horneadas (Baked):
  • Preheat oven to 400°F.
  • Sear arepas on a griddle for 2-3 minutes per side, then bake for 20-30 minutes.
  • TostiArepa (Toasted):
  • Use an arepa maker to toast the dough for 7 minutes.
