How to Make Sausage Gravy and Biscuit Pie

Ingredients

  • Sausage: 1 pound of ground sausage preferably sage or spicy, for a robust flavor.
  • Milk: 2 cups of whole milk for a creamy gravy.
  • Flour: 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour to thicken the gravy.
  • Seasonings: 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon ground sage, and an optional 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes.
  • Puff Pastry: 1 package thawed or homemade, for a flaky crust.

Instructions

Prepare the Sausage Gravy:

  • In a skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat, breaking it into crumbles until browned (7-10 minutes).
  • Sprinkle flour over the sausage, stir, and cook for 2 minutes.
  • Gradually pour in milk while stirring to avoid lumps. Simmer until thickened (5 minutes).
  • Season with salt, pepper, sage, and red pepper flakes. Adjust to taste.

Assemble the Pie:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Roll out one sheet of puff pastry and line a 9-inch pie dish, leaving an overhang.
  • Fill with sausage gravy and cover with another sheet of puff pastry. Trim and crimp edges to seal. Cut slits for steam to escape.

Bake the Pie:

  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown. Rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
