How to Use Kombu and Seaweed in Cooking

If you’re seeking kombu to make dashi, you can recreate the essence with Trader Joe’s offerings like seaweed snacks or their Nori Komi Furikake seasoning. Here’s a simple dashi recipe:

Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups water
  • 1-2 inch piece of kombu or a small handful of Trader Joe’s seaweed snacks
  • Large pinch of bonito flakes katsuo boshi

Instructions
 

  • Heat water and kombu (or seaweed) in a saucepan. Just before boiling, remove kombu and discard.
  • Add bonito flakes and boil for 30 seconds. Turn off the heat and let the flakes settle.
  • Strain the liquid and use it as a base for soups or other dishes.
