For those who love baking, maicillos are surprisingly easy to make. Here’s a step-by-step recipe to bring this cultural treat to your kitchen.
- 1 1/4 cups cornstarch
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2/3 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/8 tsp ground cloves
- 6 tbsp butter or shortening softened
- 4 egg yolks
- 1 tbsp vodka optional, enhances texture
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 –4 tbsp milk if needed
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, flour, powdered sugar, baking powder, and spices.
Incorporate Wet Ingredients
Make a well in the center of the mixture. Add egg yolks, vodka, and vanilla. Gradually mix until a dough begins to form. If it’s too crumbly, add milk one tablespoon at a time.
