Recipe: French Mac and Cheese
This recipe is inspired by classic French cooking principles, including the use of crème fraîche, Gruyère, and Cantal cheese.
- 16 ounces small macaroni
- 1 clove garlic halved lengthwise
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
- 1 ¼ cups crème fraîche
- 2 cups grated Gruyère cheese divided
- 2 cups grated Cantal cheese divided
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- ⅓ cup dry breadcrumbs
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Prepare pasta: Cook macaroni according to package instructions and drain.
Prepare the baking dish: Rub the cut garlic over the surface of a 3-quart baking dish, then brush with melted butter.
Combine ingredients: In the dish, mix cooked macaroni with crème fraîche, 1 ½ cups of each cheese, salt, and pepper.
Add toppings: Sprinkle breadcrumbs and remaining cheeses on top.
Bake: Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes until golden and bubbly.
Serve immediately: Enjoy with a side salad for a complete meal.
